Ellise Smith: A Magical Woman In More Ways Then One

When I first started this blog I wanted to help uplift and promote people of color. So I, along with my followers, reached out to people who they felt were making amazing strides in the black community. One of my followers tagged Ellise Smith under my post and I was able to talk to her about her podcast, events and plans for the future.

Ellise Smith is a Detroit, MI native and a recent graduate student of Indiana University (May 2018) where she received her M.S.Ed with a concentration in Higher Education and Student Affairs (HESA). During her time as a master’s student, Ellise took a course around the topic of diverse college students and noticed there was limited research around the topic of weight and how it factors into identity development, especially for college student. As a current doctoral student, Ellise sought out to change the negative narrative around bigger bodies including herself, by expanding her knowledge of the subject. She wanted to tell the stories of women like herself and also be an advocate because she felt these women didn’t have the proper channels to express themselves. With that determination, Ellise created the brand Fatness Fiction which is the home of the +Plus Size Magic Radio podcast. This platform takes a “pass the mic” approach by interviewing bigger bodies from a plethora of backgrounds and allowing them to speak about their experiences without the input of assumptions.

Plus Size Magic Radio serves as a humorist, lighthearted open minded, and informative approach to having open discussions and dialogue between plus size women. It is a way for them to express themselves and share their personal stories and journeys, and build a sisterhood in a sense based off of their similarities. I did not know about this podcast or Ellise Smith until one of my followers brought it to my attention. As a plus size woman myself who loves the body she’s in and is currently working on losing 100 pounds (because i want to). I would love to be a guest on her podcast one day (that day came sooner than I thought) to talk about my journey with being a plus size woman. It has defiantly been a journey.

Ellise just celebrated her 1 year anniversary of her brand on August 17th, 2018. She is currently on a a multi-city photo shoot tour that gives plus sized bodies the opportunity to model apparel (which includes the +Plus Size Magic t-shirt). The tour also will be included in the +Plus Size Magic: The Documentary that will release early 2019. In 2019 she has a large museum focused project launching that will include spoken word/storytelling, a poetry book titled “Do Fat Girls, Run?”, and the release of her book “Fatness Fiction”. Ellise Smith is a woman that is on a mission and working day in and day out to promote the empowerment of plus size bodies and being magical along the way.

I will be on her podcast Tuesday September 11, 2018 so stay tuned for details.
