Let's Talk: "A Letter To My 16-Year-Old Self"

Dear Dionna,

You are beautiful. I know you hate yourself right now and think you are not worthy but that is not true. If you only knew what I know now you wouldn’t want to take your own life. You wouldn’t want to end it all right now. Your life hasn’t even started yet. That relationship you are in right now is not worth it. And the friends you have around you right now won’t be there 5 years from now.

There is so much I want to tell you. Remember 6 years ago when you had this crazy idea that you would be a published author. WELL YOU DID IT! YOU REALLY DID IT! Everything you ever dreamed of happened and more beautiful things are coming your way. I know right now the world might not seem like its on your side and everything is going so wrong, but I promise you it will get better. The same pain you have today will not be there tomorrow. You will overcome every obstacle that has been thrown your way. I promise you.

You are going to be introduced into a lifestyle and culture that will forever change your perspective of yourself. You will gain a better understanding of this hate for yourself. You will never call yourself ugly again because you will find your own standard of beauty. You will love yourself with the most beautiful truest form of self-love there is. You will feel whole again. You will gain your smile and resilience back. You will find yourself.

If I can leave you with one thing; I will leave you with this. DON’T GIVE UP!!! I know things seem like they are at their worst but you will get over them. What you are going through right now is a test; and if you give up right now you are going to fail. You are not a quitter; you are a survivor. You will come out on top because you are a beautiful Afrikan QUEEN that has the blood of her ancestors running through your veins. You are a WARRIOR!!! Stay strong and keep fighting for your happiness, no matter what!!! I love you!

Love,

Nia (Yes we changed our name)
