Anxiety: It plays tricks on you

According to dictionary.com, anxiety is defined as: a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome. For myself the idea of uncertainty is what brings anxiety. I normally have anxiety before poetry performances, big events/gatherings and when I have to start something new because I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t know how the audience will react to my poems, or if I remember all the lines. I don’t know how events/gatherings will go, who will be there, it’s this big uncertainty, which causes me to be extra nervous.

Anxiety plays tricks on you. It makes you overthink and over analyze the simplest things. It makes you think you are unloved when you are loved and nervous about things you know you are going to do amazing at. Anxiety is all a mind game. It’s used to have you underestimate and question yourself and abilities. Don’t let anxiety have you questioning yourself. Don’t let it stand in your way of accomplishing those dream goals or going after that dream job. You got this! You can do it.

It’s okay to be nervous when starting new things and new adventures. But, don’t let that nervousness prevent you from following through with it. I know when dealing with anxiety a variety of things can happen…like sweating, nauseousness, upset stomachs, bowel movements, and the list can go on. To most people this would be a sign of stopping, a sign that this is not the right move for them. But this is actually the opposite. You don’t stop; you learn to manage and deal with it.

When dealing with anxiety, you have to push through. Practice effective breathing. Adapt positive self-talk and affirmations. Allow yourself to feel the emotion and ask yourself why you feel this way. When you are feeling anxious and feeling like an anxiety attack is coming along, breathe, remember that this is only in your head, and know that this feeling will pass. Remember that you are not anxiety and you will not let it play tricks with your mind! You are more powerful than any temporary feeling.

So spot on! I suffer from severe anxiety (especially social anxiety) and not knowing who is going to be at a social event/what people are going to say/how everything is going to play out — it can really eat me up inside. Thankfully I have gotten on some anxiety meds and it’s really helped. But also learning grounding techniques/worry postponement/decatastrophizing techniques has been really beneficial!
